Mechanisms for Redressal of Consumer Grievances

  1. District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission: Handles complaints where the value of goods or services and the compensation claimed does not exceed one crore rupees.

  2. State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission: Handles complaints where the value exceeds one crore rupees but does not exceed ten crore rupees.

  3. National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission: Handles complaints where the value exceeds ten crore rupees.

  4. Filing a Complaint: Consumers can file a complaint in the appropriate forum depending on the value of the claim.

  5. Relief Available: Compensation, replacement of goods, removal of defects, refund of the price, and punitive damages.

Role of Consumer Organizations and NGOs

  1. Consumer Education and Awareness: Conducting campaigns and programs to educate consumers about their rights and responsibilities.

  2. Advocacy: Representing consumer interests in policy-making and regulatory bodies.
